A trip through the recently launched World Digital Library (WDL) is like taking a step back in history. Over 26 institutions in 19 countries have contributed to the project, which mainly features historical documents.
Researchers can access manuscripts, maps, rare books, films, audio and photographs that relate to the history, geography, art and culture of 193 members of UNESCO.
The site is free and very useful for students in Trinidad and Tobago who are studying history, art and geography. The site is easy to navigate and impressively beautiful. Each area features a category for pictures, maps, technology, engineering, military and nautical engineering. Documents and journals or diaries help to paint a picture of what it was like to live during various historical periods. The quality of pictures and maps is excellent and there is a zoom feature for closer inspection. The map section includes atlases, maps, charts and plans. Information can be pulled up in a very visual sense in many ways. You can click on a map according to content and use the pull down to see what is available or you can search according to the year.
This site is a must for school projects, but it's also great for anyone who has a passion for world history. You can access the World Digital Library at www.wdl.org. It will make a world of difference for your school projects.
