Microsoft takes on Google's Chrome OS

Unread postby Wyspa » 13 Jul 2009 13:49

Hey ppl I'm back with more tid-bits from the web. For those of you that don't already know, Google is planning to jump into the Operating Systems market by releasing a Linux based OS called Chrome OS. This is an operating system that is based around the company's web browser Chrome. It's supposed to be integrated into the web like a normal browser but provide the tight security of an OS. Big time PC makers are reported to be onboard to implement the OS. Companies like Acer and reportedly DELL. Microsoft is planning a counter attack code named Gazelle. It seems that Microsoft is not going to take this latest push by Google lying down. Google's Chrome OS is slated to release in the later half of 2010. Now ppl this is NOT a OS like Windows, Apple's OSX etc. Its an OS built around a web browser. Its all leading up to the new push for cloud-based computing. Cloud based computing is being pushed by some big names in the industry. Its bassically all the functionality of an Operating system that's based online instead of your computer. Google is a big company behind the initiative. It seems in the future OS's that reside on your hard-drive will be obsolete. What do you guys think? There's the illusion that once you put something online its not yours anymore. But it will be awesome to access my files whereever i have internet access. This has me mixed. I love the fact that my harddrive stores my life but its still not all that portable. It's confusing trying to figure out how to feel.

I'm not too sure about cloud computing. Since Google is pioneering this effort, i'm not sure i'll trust Google or any other company with my personal data. I mean all the user's information is stored online at Google or some other server farm. And i don't just mean financial data. Every type of data you can think of. Google is notorious for keeping tabs on users who use their products. their reason is that it helps build a more personal web experience for the user. Yeah right? Its all about sending you advertisments. Money making scheme. I would never trust my business solely online. hard drives are portable these days via portable external drives and laptops. Even flash drives. I would not totally embrace cloud computing. Although there are advantages like what Raucous stated. Accessin my data where ever i have internet access.. But still I'm very skeptical about the whole ordeal. Ask yourselves this. Just how safe is your data online?

Exactly i think the paranoia is warranted. There is no way the can ensure the safety of the user's data and provide a fluid user experice at the same time. Even if they have a compartmentalised system the demographic data is still there for them to exploit. I'm ok with divulging some of my online activity but not all of it. I'd need to benefit directy from them in major ways to be so free about my info.

I used to use chrome..but I went back to IE8. Not that anything is wrong with Chrome. It is by far the fastest web browser out there. But I like the integration that IE8 offers. after all its a MS application running on a MS operating system. Everything is so streamlined.

I think this YouTube will explain.
The tyrant will always find a pretext for his tyranny and it is useless for the innocent to try by reasoning to get justice, when the oppressor intends to be unjust. - Aesop's Fable
